Cloudcroft Village Launches New Official Website Address
Lost email access forces domain change after administrative turnover
[ANALYSIS]
The official website address for the Village of Cloudcroft is now www.cloudcroftvillage.com.
The reason for the new address is simple: the village administration no longer controls the www.villageofcloudcroftnm.net domain.
What happened?
When the domain name registration recently came up for renewal, all notifications were sent to an inactive email address. Additionally, the password needed to access the domain management account was lost during the multiple staff turnovers at the village office over the past few years.
This created a perfect storm: officials couldn't see renewal notifications and couldn't prove ownership to the domain registrar without access to the original email account that registered the domain.
When the domain registration expired, someone quickly snatched it up and ‘parked’ it, making it inactive. A search of the domain ownership records found that the owner used privacy settings to conceal their identity.
That unknown party has not offered to return the previous domain to the Village.
The former domain (www.villageofcloudcroftnm.net) has limited commercial appeal outside of its connection to Cloudcroft's municipal government. Given its uniqueness, it seems unlikely that the new owner is a domain name speculator—someone hoping to resell it or use it themselves—but rather someone who wants to tie it up.
When the Village website went dark, Mayor Tim King quickly moved the website's contents to a new home — www.cloudcroftvillage.com — and published all the village’s content there. No information was lost.
The new address has the advantage of being more direct, easy to remember, and securely under the village's control.
