The Reader is looking to add 50 new Cloudcroft Stars — monthly supporters — by Labor Day, September 7. And thanks to several generous local donors, every pledge is matched dollar-for-dollar for its first year.
A community runs on infrastructure: water in the pipes, power on the lines, roads you can trust. Knowing what’s happening in your village is no different. Local accountability journalism is how a town sees itself clearly and honestly. For three years, the Reader has done that work for the greater Cloudcroft community: factual, first-hand reporting, with no paywall and no junky ads. We don’t waste your time or clutter your inbox.
So, do you think the Reader is worth the price of one sandwich a month? That’s $10 a month — and every dollar for year one is doubled by the match.
Your pledge directly supports local writers, photographers, artists, editors, and social media managers who live right here on the mountain. All locals. Bylines and faces you are familiar with. Not a corporate office. Not shareholders. Your neighbors — showing up, asking questions, and reporting what they find fairly.
Since 2023, we’ve tracked Cloudcroft’s budget, audits, and administrative turnover — and covered the water, fire, forest, school, election, and business stories that shape life on the mountain. No one else is doing this deep reporting. Your pledge keeps it going.
Also, as a Cloudcroft Star, you will receive a complimentary digital subscription to Mountain Monthly. With your permission, we will also recognize your support on our public thank-you roster, featured on our website and in our newsletters.
The Reader will always remain free for everyone on the mountain — through email newsletters, online articles, and regular posts on the Facebook groups that serve our communities. We are also producing dozens of short video reels on social media that reach tens of thousands of people who are interested in the Cloudcroft area. We believe everyone should have free access to the local news. Your pledge is what makes that possible.
