As of Tuesday morning, August 12th, the Dragon Bravo Fire near the Grand Canyon has burned over 143,974 acres, according to the Watch Duty App.
Both the Sacramento and Smokey Bear Lincoln National Forest-based hotshot crews were deployed to Dragon Bravo recently, which has reportedly grown into a “megafire,” a term the U.S. Forest Service gives to blazes that reach over 100,000 acres in size.
At certain points, Dragon Bravo burned so hot, it could create its own “fire clouds,” aka pyrocumulus and pyrocumulonimbus, which make their own unpredictable weather systems.
The fire is now said to be one of the ten largest fires in Arizona’s history.
Watch Duy Reporter Jaimee Whitfield said:
“Over the last few days, favorable weather has slowed fire growth and calmed fire behavior. Firefighters are working out ahead of the fire to identify opportunities to hold the fire at roads and topographic features. Where the fire was active, crews are extinguishing hot spots and securing line to make progress in containment in the next two to three days.”
While much of the National Park remains open, the Grand Canyon Lodge and other structures were destroyed by the blaze. There are no reports of injuries or fatalities at this time.
