Resources diverted from other areas to cover Cloudcroft, so hey no worries. We won't mention the slower response times, less patrolling, decreased coverage now for those other parts of the county..

If you’re a law enforcement department needing to hire good, respectful, honorable men to solve crimes, and honor the law enforcement creed, I would reach out and pick these 3 guys up quick. Believe me this is not about having to work a Panama schedule, they are not afraid to work 12 hour Panama schedules lol. 2 out of 3 officers they just lost , I’d take to a bar fight with me anywhere in this country.

Can’t wait to see the results of who and when the 3 newly hired Police Officers get on the force. Like they’re not gonna come with there problems and characteristics that will be new to cloudcroft. You had it good CC with what you had. I know each Officer there personally to include all 4 of their prestigious backgrounds. I hope you hire 3 big time traffic NMSP cops for the community. Everybody better be checking your license plate lights LOL! GO GET YOUR OFFICERS BACK YOU HAD AND TAKE CARE OF THEM!!!

This is great, soooo how do you expect or propose to keep the Officer up all night in his small Jurisdiction driving in circles all night with no crime and basically a ghost town when the bars close. This is idiotic thinking that the officer is not going to find somewhere to hide and sleep and your still paying for it. You are making a worse problem and thinking your doing something good, that’s funny.

I mean, how about just requiring the officer to make documented drive arounds every 3 or 4 hours through out the night while on call if that justify’s your righteous (earn your keep) mentality. Is that not logical? Yes most larger departments work Panamas but not all!!! Some work 8s some work 4 - 10s. For gods sake in CC you have the Chief performing the same duties as an Officer. Sooooo whoever gets teamed up on the Chiefs watch is just stuck on permanent night shift so the chief can do chief stuff during business hours ? Cloudcroft is unique in its ways and your trying to normalize it like its a big city. The Officers worked shifts like a fire department because it was a unique jurisdiction with low crime. Is there a huge crime spike in cloudcroft? I don’t know where your PD broke and you needed to do this to fix it. Believe me your essentially still going to be paying for the officer to sleep on the Panama schedule in that jurisdiction. Its just gonna feel good on paper and I guess that will make everyone feel safer.

Does switching to the Panama Schedule cut Officers yearly salary is the real question I have. Is this a money saving move by the CC Mayor ??? Is this truly based on a safety issue ?

This seems like way more is not being told as to what is truly happening with the CC mayor.

Wow! I will agree with other comments here saying this is a very well written article. I do want to say that anyone that thinks 12 hour shifts for law enforcement is a good idea has NEVER worked in law enforcement!! It's stressful, dangerous, and you walk around with a target on your back.....even when off duty. So Cloudcroft isn't the crime capitol of the world, but strapping a gun on your hip and putting yourself in the line of fire to protect others is NOT just a job! And OH.....BTW....firefighters get "paid to sleep"....lol. They are on call and readily available to respond at a moments notice, but they do "sleep on duty."

Well, have them come on down to Las Cruces, we're hiring!!! The 12 hr shift may be in some departments, but perhaps that is one of the things that needs to change for police reform. I worked as LE, 8 hr shifts. I cannot imagine being on duty, driving around for 12 hours!! Who can do that and still be sane?!

I know law enforcement from other states and 24/7 coverage 12 hours shifts and night IS NOT UNREASONABLE. That is what law enforcement does..not sleep in a firehouse OMG you get paid to sleep???

I WORKED in LE and it IS unreasonable! I don't care if some offices to it, it is not conducive to being alert and capable, and even friendly. An officer, after 12 hours is more vulnerable and probably, likely, more cranky, lol. You have to be on your toes. You have to be on alert. After 12 hours walking around and driving around, or sitting in one spot, you're not going to be very alert. It puts the officer, citizens, and even perps in danger.

2 weeks for a replacement? Seems like a complete lack of understanding of the labor and housing market in small mountain towns. Politicians treating long time community members as if they're expendable. Anyone that actually works in the village can not afford to live there. Likely, they'll be attempting to hire mercenaries with no connection to the area with questionable past records, ultimately costing the taxpayer more than "police sleeping".

So does Mr. Maynard "you work 12 hours and get paid for it. Then you go home and sleep, do whatever you must for 12 hours." Work 12 hour days? How about the rest of these politicians? They've done their best to make Cloudcroft a less safe place refusing to compromise with the department. The Cheif Testa has over 30 years in the community. Remember to vote.

Was really wondering what resulted in so many of the resignations which really seems due to a change in the council. Thank you for giving us the skinny!

Great well balanced article. Our current understanding is that Mayor Craig does not get a salary for all his hard work? What happened to the professional courtesy of giving notice before the clerk quit- so someone else could understand payroll?

There is a CPA on contract with the Village that does payroll.

This was a well balanced report. No judgement and without bias. Thank you Hannah and Chris. I would love to see a report on the last 12 months of police reports of criminal activity inside the village. I am sure everyone would be interested to read it. I think that would help us all understand the need for constant patrolling. Would that be possible Hannah? TIA
