Arts & Culture
The Cloudcroft Light Opera Company (CLOC) debuted “Those Wedding Bells Shall Not Ring Out” Friday night. You can catch the following shows July 4th-6th, 11th, and 12th at 7:30 at the Zenith Park Pavilion, where proceeds benefit CLOC’s scholarship program.
Since 1994, CLOC has awarded over $30,000 in scholarship funds to graduating students from Cloudcroft, Tularosa, and Alamogordo, as well as to continuing students pursuing advanced degrees in the arts.
In the first weekend of August, check out Art and Wine in the Cool Pines at the Sacramento Mountain Museum & Pioneer Village on James Canyon Highway. The event lives up to its name, featuring fine arts vendors like those from last year, including local oil painter Drew Gaines and photographer Bobby Moberly.

The Chamber of Commerce also hosts the Christmas in July Jamboree on July 13th-14th at Zenith Park and the Lumberjack Day Arts & Crafts Show on September 13th, with a lively roster of axe throwing, chainsaw competitions, and more.
The Michael Nivison Public Library should soon be open after the hire of new Library Director Sandra Barr, who will also serve as Planning and Zoning Clerk and Court Clerk for the village.

Don’t miss Cloudcroft’s budding art scene. New galleries are located on Burro Avenue, like Samantha Odom Art, The Little Gallery, and Aspen & Ivy.
The Cloudcroft Art Society holds regular holiday exhibitions and Saturday showings at their small cooperative gallery in front of the public library.
Off the Beaten Path, a cheerfully pink gallery and gift shop by Berle Van Zandt and Donna Rand just off the western end of Burro, sells handmade works and supports a stray cat trap and release program.
Black Bear Coffee Shop owners Crystal and Nathan Tompkins host monthly artists in their petite gallery space. In June, they displayed high-contrast paintings and collages of birds and landscapes by Cheryl Kaufman.
Kaufman is an artist and medieval historian who earned an undergraduate degree in fine arts and theology, as well as a PhD in medieval history. While her subjects, like hummingbirds, are flattened in a nod to Kaufman’s era of study—like illustrations in a medieval manuscript or stained glass window—the bold curves and rhythmic shapes of a wing or a rolling mesa draw you in for a closer look.
See for yourself, and sip Black Bear’s seasonal Mountain Hibiscus iced tea while you’re at it.
