Expert Says Cloudcroft Must Fix Aging Wastewater Plant as State Tightens Nitrogen Rules
Cloudcroft faces two big wastewater decisions at once:

“How are these rules compared to federal rules?”—on “Expert Says Cloudcroft Must Fix Aging Wastewater Plant as State Tightens Nitrogen Rules”
Here’s our answer to that thoughtful question:
The state’s proposed 10 mg/L total nitrogen limit at the wastewater plant is comparable to the federal 10 mg/L nitrate‑as‑N drinking‑water standard, and it applies at the point of discharge rather than at a kitchen tap.
The EPA standard for nitrate in drinking water is 10 mg/L. There is no single national nitrogen limit, and requirements are set on a case‑by‑case basis under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program.
